Each year, DFGFI staff at Karisoke spend thousands of hours collecting basic information about the mountain gorillas, including their locations, births and deaths, health status, and major events (such as changes in group composition, interactions among groups, and any unusual occurrences).
These data are transferred and stored in a long-term database, which is used by scientists from around the world to study basic questions about gorilla life and to look at practical issues regarding their conservation. These studies are carried out both by members of our staff and by scientists from other educational institutions and organizations.
